I love to pack for New York City. Packing is not usually one of my favorite pastimes, but I love thinking about all the fun we’re going to have when we get there. I have a standard list, but the fun is the choosing: which sweaters, skirts, booties and scarves will make the cut?
Below is the master list I use for our Fall trip. I’m confident that whatever I’m missing can be easily picked up at one of my favorite thrift shops in the Village. We also count on sending laundry out at least once during the trip, so I don’t need a week’s worth of socks or undies.
Two jeans | Five long sleeved tops |
Two skirts | Cardigan and leather jacket |
Undies and camis | Sleepwear |
Socks and hose | Scarves |
One dress | Lounge wear |
Walking shoes | One belt |
And here are a couple of pieces I’d love to add to the list, that suit my NYC vibe and the cool October weather:

I find packing for New York to be challenging – I always end up taking way more stuff than I need because I often don’t know what I’ll be doing. I do know I will be hanging out with a stylish crowd so I end up taking some of my favourite pieces, usually in black 😉
I hope your trip is wonderful Patti. Your choices of attire sound perfect and I love your thrifting backup plan! You’ll make it anywhere!!!
We’ve got a trip to NYC and other parts east in a couple weeks. I’m so looking forward to packing my favorite fall sweaters and boots that I haven’t been able to wear yet here in SoCal. I hope that you have a marvelous time.

I like the idea of sending laundry out. I always pack just enough underwear to last so I don’t have to worry about that. I was hit with unexpected weather on my current trip — 70’s and nearly 80 in Chicago! I packed for fall and got summer (almost). Ended up borrowing some things from my sisters (luckily we are of similar size). Have fun on your trip.
thanks, Linda – yes the laundry down the street does a fine job, even fold our socks

Patti,
Love the faux fur capelet and that luxurious two toned pashmina wrap, perfectly suited for the city or any destination. I would bring at least two pair of comfy shoes….and I hope you call me if you are in manhattan !

thanks Elle! xo
I love the faux-fur capelet and the wrap. And so it begins, the packing, the excitement. You’re going to have such a great time!
Thanks Mel! Next trip, Vancouver? : >
I do hope so!!!!
I love your NYC posts – I went there for lots of long weekends when I live in Boston, it was an easy train ride, and like you I enjoyed the village and downtown. We usually planned an off Broadway play on Friday night, and on Saturday poked around village galleries, street fairs and outdoor markets. I still have a bunch of art I bought on the street in Soho! Miss the experience, Enjoy!!!
Those weekends sound amazing, Ramona! Boston is a great city too. xo
Oh how I wish I were headed to NYC!!! Such a fun and cool place to be!

thank you, Kellyann! xo
I don’t know if NYC is having the amazing fall we are but currently it is 24C here and shorts weather. In the evening it does cool right off though.
Have a wonderful trip!
Suzanne
Thanks Suzanne. It’s supposed to be in the mid-60’s in the daytime, which sounds like heaven to me : > xox
I have a standard list too, but still I’m hopeless at packing. Having to make the right choices somehow fills me with dread, as I usually end up taking the wrong things. I still live in hope that one day I’ll get it right. I’m always taking a wrap or poncho thing, though that capelet looks very tempting as well. Good luck and have a fabulous time! xxx
thanks Ann! I bet you do just fine with your packing – and anyway it’s the experience that counts, xo
