I like to think of myself as a not-trends-driven woman. But they’re out there relentlessly competing for our attention among the seasonal classics. Trendy items affect our mind’s eye when we shop, whether retail or second-hand. We often modify trends to fit our own aesthetic, and eventually they make their way into our closets in some iteration.
Can we get an Amen or No, Thanks to some of the looks trending for Winter 2017/2018? No wrong answers, we like what we like and that’s that. : >
“Teddy” coats. These fuzzy jackets get a Yay from me. I love the feel of them, and I think I had one when I was 18. That I live in Florida has no bearing on me wanting one of these.
Fancy denim jackets. Another Yay for me. I’ve always owned a denim jacket, not the same one, for the last 45 years. I’m really attracted to the embroidered jacket trend, whether store-bought or DIY.
Faux fur toppers. These can be a simple vest, like below, or a fancy wrap. I don’t wear real fur, unless it’s vintage, but the new faux fabrics are so soft and yummy. Another Yay.
Huge sweaters. These are for sale at every price point, and there seems to be no limit to the amount of fabric! These are fun and trendy, but they don’t suit my small frame; I feel like I’m wearing a beach towel.
Lace-up everything. Not only these bold boots, but there’s lacing on sweaters and jackets too. OK, another Yay.
And making return appearances this Winter: upscale boho, blanket scarves, sneakers with everything, moto jackets, fringe, and Chelsea booties.

Thank you for this superb article. I was never an online shopping kinda guy & have recently jumped on to this bandwagon. One of my favourites is shopping with ObeyClothing.com. I am always amazed at the things I end up buying that I would never have tried on! I especially love the wonderful collection of men’s coach jackets.
I always have a very good sense of what just isn’t going to work for me. I’m glad that I know my body and what works on it and what doesn’t. I see women who I think have no sense of their form or what is and isn’t flattering. BUT, because I’m all about wearing what you like, I don’t judge… well maybe I just keep my mouth shut .
So what about that Patti? Are we ALWAYS constrained by some bunch of rules that we really DO subscribe to ? Even though we profess freedom to ” BE ” regardless of age, physique, fitness level, etc. ?
I don’t mind oversized sweaters as long as they are not oversized in the arm length because then they are just going to get in everything and who wants that. If my closet has it, I wear the trend and if not I probably won’t. I do like all the red going around and I have a bit of that.
I’m liking the red too. xo
Except for the oversized sweater, those trends get a yay from me and a place in my wardrobe. I’m lacking on a faux fur topper but it isn’t from a lack of trying.

keep trying! you’ll look terrific in it. xo
Oh Lordy lord Patti!
Those boots have made me swooooooon…. a BIG Yay from me!
XXX
i can def see you wearing them with style, Sam! xo
patti, So happy the faux fur vest is still a trend.
me too! xo
I have a black and white faux fur vest that I love, and I like lace-up detailing, but it would be a “Nay” from me on the embellished jean jacket and oversized sweater. I do wear large-size sweatshirts with jeans, but when they get so big as to be sloppy they don’t do anyone any favours.
right – oversized is one thing, and sloppy is another : > xo
I just bought another fur vest, so I hope they stick around awhile!!!
I think everything can be fun!!
XOXO

Agreed – what we love to wear makes us feel happy! xo
Yay for me for all—-although huge sweaters are not flattering on me, I do like them 🙂
love your attitude, Becky! xo
I’m a bit of a sucker for lace up boots. I think I may have found my *perfect* pair on Etsy. Early 1970s brown front lace ups. I cannot wait to wear them.
I drooled a bit over that fancy fringed scarf you picked out.
I love the look of the oversized sweaters on tall thin women otherwise it can look sloppy and since I’m not tall nor thin I’ll be passing this trend by.
I’m all over that embellished jean jacket trend though. I’ve DIY’d my own.

your DIY denim jacket is what inspired me! It’s beautiful. xo
Nothing oversized; faux fur for throws not garments. I just say no to moto jackets so as not to look like an aging biker babe.
One of my treasures is a Julia Kim embellished jacket from a thrift shop. I bought it because I liked it, had no idea it was art. JK co. dissolved some time back.
Can’t get enough Chelsea boots. Prefer zippers to lacing.
An embellished jacket sounds wonderful, xo
Oh no! I go off stuff when it’s trendy (but love it when the hipsters go off it and I can buy it at charity shops). Love lace up boots and fake fur and, like you, don’t do big baggy jumpers.
I’d kill for original Afghan gillet – I’d have to sell a kidney to afford one. xxx
I know what you mean – I snatch up what I love when it gets to the thrift shop! xo
I am going for the faux fur, and the lace-up boots! In fact, I bought a pair at a thrift shop a couple of weeks ago. They look very similar, just a darker shade of brown. xxx
Looking forward to seeing them at your blog, Ann. xo
So happy the faux fur vest is still a trend. I have one that I haven’t worn yet 🙂
Monica.
yes, they’re such a great layer! xo
