I call myself a decent writer and crappy photographer. I’ve got that left-brain thing working hard, and truth be told I don’t like having my picture taken. But what a difference a real photographer and lighting makes!

Welcome to Visible Monday. If you want to participate, it’s so easy: just go to the bottom of this post for the how-to. Link back to Not Dead Yet Style if you like – we’re on Easy Does It “rules” now!

I had the pleasure of visiting my friend Suzanne last week, and she not only has an amazing vintage shop, she let me try on some of her treasures. And, she took pictures in her studio, with great lights and backdrop. Wow, I need to get some better gear, because I love, love this picture. Truly Visible. You don’t have to be a professional photographer to take incredible fashion pictures; you do need equipment and practice.

This gorgeous dress is available at the shop at a very nice price. It’s flowy and flattering, with tiers of elegant ruffles. Go grab it before it’s gone. And don’t forget some kicky peep-toe Mary Jane heels.

Here’s another super-feminine dress from Suzanne’s store. Style tip of the week: invest in good lighting and a go-to photo location if you want clear, colorful pictures. Second tip: shop second-hand whenever you can.

Love this colorful dress too. It’s silk and has sexy side slits. I’m wearing my rich-girl bracelet, thrifted in NYC.

  1. Ah, to have the chance to experience Suzanne’s EYE. Excellent! These shots of you are stunning. Great model, lighting, backdrop, outfits, and photographer all wrapped in that shine of friendship, as Sherry said. A magic combination. So glad I could see the horses dress in person! Thanks for hosting the linkup, Patti. xo

  2. Patti, you look stunning here. I saw Suzanne’s post and was admiring how wonderful you looked. I agree that good lighting is key to an excellent photo. Sometimes outdoor lighting is tricky with the shadows.
I am admiring the black and white dress with all of the ruffles . That might be a maxi on me and could be a nice addition to my already, shall we say, abundant wardrobe ?
It looks like you all had so much fun together. That is the most important part .

  3. Those are wonderful photos, marvelous dresses, and an elegant model! How fun.

    Happy Labor Day!

  4. Yeah, one of these days, I may actually get a better camera, and some lights…but for the volume of posts, I really don’t want to add much time to my routine. I do appreciate a good photo, though, and don’t you look spectacular in these, dear Patti??

Thank you so much for hosting “Visible Monday”! much appreciated, as always.

  5. You look absolutely divine on these photographs, dear Patti, and both outfits are gorgeous and suit you perfectly! I can only add that, other than good lighting and decent camera, it also makes a huge difference when the photographer looks at you with a loving eye – at least, to me as a non-professional model, it matters. I can see that you felt beautiful not only because of the gorgeous dresses and backdrops, but also because you felt wonderful when the pictures were taken – I can feel love from the other side coming through you.

  6. Oh wouldn’t it be a dream to have this studio space ready for a shoot whenever you wanted? You look fabulous Patti, but you also looked fab in the shot that Suzanne featured which was taken on that Huawei phone too! What fun you gals had at that party – I’m green with envy.

  9. You always look great, but I agree, that lighting looks good!! I love finding a good vintage shop to browse; glad you had fun trying things on 🙂
Thank you for hosting the linkup.
    Best wishes

  10. you look amazing in these looks, Patti!! That first dress!!! You should have bought that. The backdrop is so cool and the photos look awesome. I agree, good camera and some practice helps, but I do think, your backdrop with the cat is just so cute. Better lighting maybe, but I think that could be easily done!

  11. You look gorgeous. The clothes are stunning and suit you so well. The whole shebang is brilliant.

  12. OMG Patti you look fantastic!!! And nice setting. Yes, but I think photographers can only do so much and I am sure Suzanne will agree that you make a fabulous model <3 Have a lovely week. xo Sabina

  13. mwhaha, so fabulous to see you in Suzanne’s usual corner, so shocking and amusing! and you look particularly gorgeous in Suzanne’s clothes, such fab dresses!
I totally agree on quality photos making a difference! I wish I could have my pictures taken always by a photographer instead of using my crappy camera timer!
    besos

  14. Both of the dresses are just wonderful on you Patti. Suzanne ‘s photos of you are lovely but she did have a good model . Glad you had such a great time in Toronto.

  15. It must have been amazing being styled and photographed by the talented Suzanne! I’m very lucky that my husband is a great photographer and, although I was crap at posing when I started blogging, it has kind of grown on me. Unfortunately, we haven’t got the space for a proper studio and equipment, but we have kind of adopted the wall in our rented garage! You’re looking fantastic in both dresses! xxx

  16. Beautiful photos. I love the flowers and butterflies on the wall.
Maybe the clean white background is more flattering than a yellowish one? I think you always look great, but it’s true that you look even better here. (Nothing against yellow walls–my office is very high-energy, un-mellow yellow.)
You do justice to the dresses, too. I love the Dorothy shoes.

  17. Absolutely adore you in those dresses!! Shopping vintage is so much fun and you know for almost certain that you’ll have a unique piece.

  18. I recognized that beautiful, infamous flower wall art of Suzanne’s. She did a fantastic job shooting you Patti and I must say I love your outfits very much.

Happy Labor Day weekend!! <3 Ada.

  19. You look amazing. Is that the lipstick Suzanne gave you? Both of the dresses are stunning, and I have always loved Suzanne’s backdrop.

  20. Boy Patti, I would describe myself the exact same way – I love to write but the pictures part? Yeah, I stink. It certainly doesn’t help that I don’t enjoy having my picture taken and cameras just baffle me. These pics sure are terrific though! Wouldn’t it be nice to have a photographer all the time? One can dream.

  21. Oh what fun it was having my own live Barbie doll to play with and dress up : P

I kind of wish I could take my studio lighting everywhere with me. Best $200 I ever spent on my blog. I shudder when I think about my old bedroom lighting and how it made me look 20 years older.

Thanks for the shout-out lady! Both the pug and I miss you.

  22. Patti, not only are these pieces stunning but you look 30 years old!!! So so perfectly beautiful!! Must have been a fun day at Suzanne’s store!
