Visible Monday #117: Look Good, And Do Good

Welcome to Visible Monday #117! If you want to participate, it’s so easy: just go to the bottom of this post for the how-to. Please be kind and leave a link to Not Dead Yet Style in your post.

This week I am a mysterious Woman In Black  – except for my fuzzy hair and my fab new jacket. The Bindu reversible jacket is courtesy of MarketPlace: Handwork of India.

They’re a company that does good. This is how they describe themselves:

We are a fair trade organization and nonprofit started over 25 years ago.  Our
mission is to increase economic opportunities for low-income women in
India, and empower them to bring about positive social change for
themselves, their families, and their communities.  We work with 480
women artisans around the city of Mumbai who form 14 cooperatives that
produce clothing and home décor items currently sold fair trade in the
U.S.

So Marketplace does good things, and creates very cool clothing. My cotton jacket is light and floaty, beautifully printed on both sides, and so versatile. I’ve worn it with dresses, as here, and with my distressed (= holey) jeans.

Marketplace offers gorgeous dresses, skirts, and my favorites – long tunics that are awesome over jeans or leggings.

Love the print on this Amboli tunic
The dress is old, from Banana Republic. Thrifted Donald J. Pliner boots! And thrifted key necklace.

  31. There are a few Marketplace reviews around at the moment, like Val's and Jo's posts. Everyone has chosen something different, and written about the ethical basis of the organisation, and its social conscience. It sounds like a really sound business.
