Pleated Trousers: My First Pair Since 1989!

I just received these slouchy trousers, or “Peg Pants” from ASOS. I was inspired to try this retro look by Angie at You Look Fab. She’s fond of these trousers and I found myself warming to the nostalgic silhouette.

ASOS Peg Pants, $30.

Even the description at the ASOS site sounds like 1989: “The details include: a high-rise waist with pull-on styling, pleats to the front, pockets to the hips and a tapered leg with a stitched roll cuff (emphasis mine).” Whoa, my favorite pants of 25 years ago!

I was prepared to laugh myself silly in the mirror, but I actually like them. They’ll be a great jeans-substitute and can be worn to “dressy casual” as well as purely casual activities. They feel like pajamas and the pockets are fun. My only complaint is the butt is a little loose, like track pants, so I’ll probably cover that feature.

Here are a few possibilities I put together on Polyvore:

Untitled #31

I think I’ll need to accent my waist, because the pants are voluminous around the hips. I don’t want to be completely shapeless. If I don’t wear a belt, I can define my waist with a fitted denim jacket or other blazer.

These trousers work best with a shoe with some heel, or, if flats, a masculine oxford (love these!). I’ll keep the jewelry simple and modern – no enormous disc earring from the 80’s!

What say you? Would you ever wear this style (or wear it again)? Too 80’s for your fashion vibe?

  1. I love them! They even suit me and last year I piked some up in black from the Zara sales. I look forward to wearing them again when the weather warms up and I can't wait to see how you wear yours!

  2. i've never been a huge fun of the silhouette before but I suspect they might fit my figure. Nice you brought it up.

  3. Probably wouldn't wear that exact style as I have never found a pair of pleated pants that didn't make me look like I was wearing a sad uniform from the early 90s. However I'm still looking for a more extreme voluminous pair of harem pants. I adore that tank in your polyvore.

  4. Not if you paid me! I would look like an abomination in those pants. You are tall and slim so they probably work like a dream for you. I'm dying to see you in them πŸ˜‰

  5. I have been dabbling with this idea too but haven't found the right pant. I like the sweater in the photo. That (slightly) cropped length is just right for the "high-rise" pleated waist. Well done you!

  6. The skinnier leg makes it fit better back in modernity. I would be tempted if I can whittle a little off my hips – they don't need any emphasis. Cropped tops and high heels would look great and retro. Oxfords would look fab! Can't wait to see what you do with them!

  7. Love the pants!!! I would probably wear a boxy style crop top. Not super high, but a top that stops at my natural waist. Shorter tops work great with high waisted pants.

  8. Would I ever wear these pants again? No, no, a thousand times no πŸ™‚ But ask me if I'd wear the seventies styles again and the answer would be very different!
