Beige is not boring, despite reviews to the contrary. In fact, we’re changing the name of this maligned color to cafe-au-lait. It just needs a little love and a couple of accessories, and beige – and all its variants – is a cool choice for southern summer.

Welcome to Visible Monday. If you want to participate, it’s so easy: just go to the bottom of this post for the how-to. Link back to Not Dead Yet Style if you like – we’re on Easy Does It “rules” now!

I found this long cool number at Housing Works Thrift in the West Village. It’s a good-quality cotton knit by Everlane, an “ethically sourced” clothing company. It’s brand new, and it was marked down to $10. Yes, please. I love a long, easy dress with no fussing needed.

Monochrome, yes. Boring? I say no. : >

I added a black tank underneath, as the armholes are cut reeaalllly deep, and who wants to see my summer bra? The rose-tone pendant is new, and retail(!) from Nordie’s. It was purchased with a gift card from the airline that left me cold and lonely in Vancouver (read about the merry airport mixups here).

I love the way my Steve Madden sneaker/oxfords look with the dress. My foot looks strangely enormous here, no photoshop was done.

I’m over the moon for my new ring, created by a true designer/artist. There’s only one left that I know of, at the artist’s Etsy shop. It has weight and gravity, and the stone casts pink shadows, like magic.

Now, let’s see what’s in your closet, Visible Women. The guidelines to participate in the Visible Monday Link-Up are so simple:

  1. Patti, you look stunning! Chic, elegant, modern! Far far far from boring!
I loved what my friend Beate, blogger, artist and fashion designer, said about all this “boring beige” – “Colors are as innocent as angels!” http://bahnwaerterhaeuschen.blogspot.com/
We are those who are responsible for making them interesting, fun or boring. It’s all in our interpretation!
Love the sneakers and the ring!

  2. Okay, okay…I take it all back! I actually shout to passers-by at festivals, ” Don’t be scared, come on in, we’re a beige-free zone in here!” and there you are demonstrating that you don’t have to be deadly dull to wear it after all – you look amazing! xxx

  3. I agree with everyone, beige isn’t boring when the style is interesting and has the perfect accessories , like your necklace and wonderful ring. Many thanks for hosting Visible Monday Patti.

  4. I love sneakers and summer dresses – another great look! And more beige – or cafe-au-lait is sneaking into my wardrobe as well! Thank you for the inspiration 🙂

  5. I’ve always loved beige and have never found it the least bit boring. In fact it’s one of my favorite colors 🙂 You look summer cool in your beige maxi, Patti, and I’m in love with those sneakers!

    • Thank you, Sherry! Love that new name for my necklace – a peace offering : > Stay fabulous, xo

  6. I think this is a great dress and a perfect canvas for anything you would like to wear with it. (I am thinking a denim jacket in fall/winter!)

  7. Gorgeous ring. The artist is Bag and a Beret’s husband, yes? It’s really special.

  8. Totally with everyone here – the colour is great as long as you it style with great accessories which you have. You look really good as well xxx

  9. There are some fabulous café au lait (I fully approve of that name!) around, but ultimately it’s how you wear it which determines whether it’s boring or not. Your gorgeous maxi dress isn’t at all boring, and I love the addition of the pendant and the Steve Madden sneakers! xxx

  10. Yes! Beige is not boring! It’s how you wear something that makes it boring (or not). I wear it with colour most often and find it to be a very handy wardrobe staple.

  11. You look polished, elegant and beautiful. Love your new ring!

  12. I swear your style is getting more fleek and chic by the day : )

I think your bold red lip and gorgeous jewellery and shoes elevate the beige beyond where most beige has been.

Wohoo on buying Mel’s hubby’s ring! Pretty special.

  15. Coincidentally I am wearing beige (cafe an lait) today! It looks very elegant on you Patti and the ring is a real classic.

  16. Well I bought a beige skirt last week so I don t think it s boring at all! Great accesoires! Have a good week Patti!

  17. A French friend has informed me that the solution to huge armholes and transparent fabric is to wear a beautiful bra that’s “meant to be seen.” I have yet to come to terms with this concept.
Check out the podcast “How I Built This,” which recently featured Steve Madden, talking about creating his shoe empire.

  18. I think beige can be boring if that’s the only colour we wear. I’ve added a lot of colour to my wardrobe since blogging, but beige remains a fabulous neutral and can be paired with other colours or accessorized to make a great outfit.

    Thank you for hosting!

  19. I really like the dress, Patti, it has this subdued cool vibe. The sneakers bring the sports feel and look great with the dress

  20. What a great find. I really like your shoes with the maxi, you’re right, a great addition.

  21. Your sneakers are gorgeous—LOVE!!!!! You look so great in that knit and the rose gold pendent is so fun—not enough rose gold in general!!! I def need some personally!!!

  22. Nope, sorry, you won’t win me over to beige even with a name change! ;-P It is just not me. I love the cut and style of this dress on you, though, Patti, and the perfect accessorizing! Very excited to see you got one of O’s rings! My fingers are too narrow to deal with the width of the band, unfortunately.

Thanks so much for hosting “Visible Monday” – I will be there shortly!

  23. Beige is a main staple colour in my wardrobe! it’s what suits me and I don’t care if people think it’s boring, I love it! xx

  24. I completely agree about beige or cafe-au-lait. Navy, black, red, green are just a few of the colors I wear with my rather large collection of that NOT boring color!
And to find an Everlane dress. I am window shopping on their site all the time. I so want a pair of their black loafers. I loved this post because it is about one of my most beloved colors.
