I usually like a flowy shape for my dresses, and save “structured” for blazers and jackets. But this dress captured me, with its strict lines and crisp fabric (similar). It’s good to step out of the zone sometimes, yeah?

A structured dress is a fresh look for me:

Welcome to Visible Monday. If you want to participate, it’s so easy: just go to the bottom of this post for the how-to. Please be kind and leave a link to Not Dead Yet Style in your post.

I found this unusual frock (no label! it’s making me nuts) at the Revolve consignment store in St. Petersburg. As soon as I tried it on, I had to have it – for a princely $15. It’s so well made, fully lined and finished with care. I realize it may not be the most “flattering” shape for me, but we don’t always have to dress to flatter; sometimes we can dress to express. This dress feels sophisticated, minimalist, and downtown NYC. I added only a modern necklace created by the talented Suzanne Carillo, and simple black booties (sim).

This is the best pic for showing the bodice details. And the gorgeous black cat, King, who chose to match me today. My boy.

Outdoors, you can only see the shape of the dress. Which is stark, but I love the look.

  1. What a great find! It’s unique, well made and fits you like a glove, Patti! It is possibly a custom made dress then, and I think those are priceless!

  2. I really like the shape of that dress, especially the neckline. I’m familiar with the brand Sheila mentioned – Kitchen Orange – and it does look like one of their pieces! I prefer to wear structured dresses, which are more flattering on me than loose, drapey ones, but I have a few of those I wear when it gets hot in the summer.

  3. What a handsome accessory King is! He matches that fabulous frock a treat. A perfect shape, I love it. xxx

  4. Aw, I love seeing King in the picture. 🙂 That dress reminds me of a brand called Kitchen Orange. Love the cool details on it. Thank you for hosting, Patti!

  5. That dress has a stark simplicity to it so reminiscent of Japanese designers such as Kawakubo and Yamamoto, Patti. Seemingly plain at first glance, it holds so much potential in terms of versatility and little accent details. I love that collar on you. It’s almost nun-like yet not quite, if that makes sense, my friend 🙂 it really does fit beautifully on you.

And speaking of looking so edgy and beautiful, Patti, my weekly Project Sister Act Friday link-up is live and on the blog now, \and I would love for you to come and share this outfit. I’ve taken advantage of your Monday link-up for so long, it’s high time I repaid the favour 🙂 xoxo

  6. ooo, I want to see more details. The outlines look cool, but what’s happening inside the lines? Like the gathering around the bodice….

  7. Patti, what a steal and Revolve has some great stuff. What I find most interesting about LBDs is their details, and this top part is great, fitted with detail and love the aline shape on you too. The necklace Suzanne made is the perfect piece for added texture/color. YOu look great!

  9. I like a structured dress, it helps to give me curves I don’t actually have. You look great, but sorry, it is King who is stealing the show! He is beautiful. I used to always have black cats as a child. We would name them Ajax and Comet, over and over. Lol!

  10. The older I get the more I like dresses. It’s one piece and you have a look. Love your dress and especially how it is the perfect canvas to highlight Suzanne’s great necklace. Thank you for hosting Patti!

  11. You always find the most amazing pieces Patti! Gosh I wish we knew who made this one, it’s wicked – Incredible detail & the length is perfection on you xxx

  12. This structured style looks good on you. And Suzanne’s necklace is perfect with it. Hahaha, I’m glad King dressed to match!

    • What an excellent post. I actually think about this frequently. When I come across a blog that presents nothing but tips and advice for writers, I will usually come back to it periodically to check in but I don't necessarily add it to my daily blog stop. Why? I like to learn about the person and make that connection you talked about. Voice is really important to me in blogs. I blog because it helps me connect with people, makes me feel less alone in the writing journey and makes sense of the irrational sometimes.

  16. I adore the shape of the dress! I find A-lines are flattering for everyone. It really looks high end. My necklace looks great with it : )

I know what you mean about being frustrated when the labels are ripped out.
