Who (Living Or Dead) Would You Most Like To Have Lunch With?

I love having talky lunches with my husband, or sister, or girlfriends. There’s never a lack of interesting topics to cover, from Peaky Blinders, to business plans, teenagers, style, science, and politics. Hypothetical: what if I could have lunch with anyone, living or dead, and what would I want to talk about?

There are too many fascinating people to choose just one, including but not limited to: Christian Dior, Sigmund Freud, Maria Callas, Kurt Vonnegut, Leonard Bernstein, Madame Curie, Isaac Asimov, Margaret Atwood, Betty Friedan . . . and dozens more.

So here are my current choices for a Friday luncheon, my treat, and I’d love to hear about yours:

Albert Einstein/Richard Feynman. Two of the greatest scientific minds of the 20th century. I don’t know if I would ask, “Are there multiple universes?”, or “How did you get your hair to do that?” Either way, I’d just like to breathe in the same air as either of these geniuses.

Einstein died the same month I was born. I’ve asked my mother if he could be my dad (the hair), but she says def not.

Adele, for a voice lesson. She’s one of the most skilled popular singers ever, and she writes the saddest songs. I’d love an hour with her to ask about her powerful resonance, the emotions she conveys, and how to hit those thrilling low notes.

Beautiful and so talented.

Doug Adams. Author of A Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, among other treasured tales. He died way too young at age 49 in 2001. I’d just sit and listen to him tell stories from his imagination. He did come up with my favorite insult (so British too: “You’re a wanker, a tosspot, and a tiny piece of a turd.”) Those Brits can really insult with personality.

If you like the absurd and the profound in a cheery mix.

  1. Oooh, great question. I’d love to listen in on your gathering! I think I’d like to dine with a female pirate, I can’t think of any that come to mind, and her all female crew, if such a thing existed. 17th century? And Eartha Kitt.

  2. I would love to have lunch with my favorite Bob Marley, and share an edible gummy bear. And the amazing poet, Sherman Alexi, very much alive.

  3. Thomas Jefferson, Robin Williams, Mother Teresa, Oprah Winfrey, Michelangelo, Meryl Streep, Harriet Tubman . I’d want to know who they’d have lunch with and why.

  4. I certainly wouldn’t turn down lunch dates with any of your choices, and I would add that I love Adele for her sense of humour and down to earth attitude. My list would included Margaret Atwood, Tabatha Southey, Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Stephen Fry, Socrates, Jane Austen, and my maternal grandmother.
