Just Sleeve It Up To The Fabulous Over-40 Women

You fashionistas have no doubt noticed that an interesting sleeve has moved to the center of style focus. First, the cold shoulders were everywhere (I never warmed up to them, but wear what you love). Then the deep bell sleeves, the ones that swipe through your marinara sauce. Now layers of ruffles, lantern shapes, gathers, embroidery and more.

I can’t think about sleeves without remembering this hilarious scene from Roxanne:

You’ll see all manner of interesting sleeves in the shops right now. And as always, you can find a fab variety on the over-40 women of Visible Monday:

Stand out with a luxurious gathered sleeve: Glenda of So What To Twenty is stunning in this soft pink tee with gathered sleeves. She writes about sleeve history at her post too, and she’s a true student of fashion (and a first-class accessorizer).

Layer up your ruffles: Kellyann of of This Blonde’s Shopping Bag looks delightful in a new wine-colored dress with statement ruffles on the sleeve. Her sunglasses, boots and jewelry are all sophisticated, for a great out-to-dinner look.

Go casual and colorful: Suzanne of Ask Suzanne Bell always looks smart, and I love it when she goes casual. This fun hooded cardigan has an embroidered sleeve that enhances the whole look. Sweet booties too.

Go for a sweatshirt with personality: Debbie of Fashion Fairy Dust elevates a sweatshirt with drop-shoulder ruffles, creating an unexpected outfit for work. The partial tuck and cool boots make the look picture-perfect.

Embroider your story: Linda of A Labour Of Life chose a cool dress with a trumpet sleeve and floral embroidery. She paired it with high boots for a fun and funky Fall look.

  1. Interesting sleeves can surely make (or break) a garment. They’re often a selling point for me. I was never a fan of the cold shoulder either … xxx

    • yes, it’s fun to have the focus on sleeves, and it’s less cumbersome than the fringe trend : >

  2. Oh yes, the sleeves have it this year! I was chuckling over the Roxanne clip and then gasped when I saw my picture! Thanks so much Patti, it was such a pleasant surprise!

  3. While I appreciate the variety of sleeve-types, living in a less than warm climate, all I can think of is how the devil would I get my coat on when wearing some of those bulky sleeves?

    First world problem, for sure.
