Oh, Irma, Stay Away! Hurricane Dreams

Since I moved to Florida, I have survived many hurricanes. The scariest storm to hit Florida in the last 30 years was Hurricane Andrew in 1992. It was tragic to see the devastation Andrew caused in South Florida; we in Central Florida were fortunate to escape it.

We did take some hard hits with hurricanes Erin, Francis, Charley, Irene, and Matthew. The big bad storm brewing in the Caribbean right now, Hurricane Irma, is said to be the most dangerous hurricane of all. Although we’ve been lucky to not only survive, but rebuild fully after each storm, this bad girl is giving me the willies.

Yeah, nothing personal, Irma, but go away.

Since I am quite certain Irma will not kill us, I wonder: what is the basis of all my fear? I’m sure one factor is that when a storm is coming, of any kind, we are completely out of control. Mother Nature takes over, and wreaks havoc however she will. We’re little dots on a map, hoping she won’t pay us any mind.

And of course there is the fear of loss. Life is the most precious thing, the only miracle in fact, and the lives of my pets matter tremendously to me too. There are just a few material things I would be sad to lose: my dad’s guitar, the coffee table Sandy’s father made for us, and some photos and art. Go out to sea, Irma, please!

I’m going to prepare the Visible Monday post so that it goes live at the usual time on Sunday evening. I may not have electricity to respond to your always delightful comments, so my apologies in advance. If you are in Irma’s path, please stay safe, and stay fabulous as ever.

Reminder: Visible Monday starts Sunday around 5PM. You are invited to share your favorite outfit, accessory, hairstyle or lipstick of the week – anything that made you feel Visible. Be there for the best blogger party and the finest style on the webz!

  1. I’m crossing my fingers and toes for you Patti that it will miss you.

I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to have storms like that so often.

    Be safe!

  2. Since I heard about Irma I have spent part of each day thinking about you, hoping for the safety of you and your family, and everyone on Irma’s path. I hope that she gets tired and dissipates. Stranger things have happened.

  3. Hey Patti. Hope you have a safe place to stay. I am lucky that I’m still up in New England. If I wasn’t I would probably have evacuated. I sat in my house through Wilma and it was extremely frightening. And I think this storm is going to be worse. I know you’re a bit more north of me, so I hope it weakens a bit by the time it gets to your area. (or better yet, misses!) It’s going to be a doozy! So please take care.

  4. Stay safe! I can’t even imagine what a hurricane is like, but the images we’ve seen of the destruction on those Caribbean islands are scary. Will be thinking of you and hoping you and your family are safe and out of harm’a way.

  5. Take care, Patti. Stay safe; get out if things get too dangerous.

If you don’t already, suggest you follow Karen Walrond (chookooloonks.com) – a blogger/writer/lawyer/TED talker in Houston who’s family, just last week, had only 20 minutes to evacuate their house from flood waters (due to reservoir releases). It was totaled–they were only able to rescue a few things. You can find her blog and podcast on her page. The most recent podcast is about how she and her family are coping and how her well established gratitude practice is helping her cope.

  6. I’m old enough to remember hurricanes Betsy and Camille. Irma scares me more than either of those. Please be safe.

  7. Stay safe. My sister in law lives in the Ocala area; she is a transplanted Northerner, and she is nervous about this hurricane.

  8. Oh Patti, living here in Orlando I feel like a sitting duck! And of course today is BEAUTIFUL! It makes me wonder, what will things look like next Friday? Will our house be the same? Will our friends and family be ok? I want to go outside and record my street and neighborhood as they are now because with the wind and rain expected things will definitely not look the same. We are prepared and I am trying not to be afraid but the stress is creeping in – getting everything ready and helping our neighbors and my elderly parents, my son is in Gainesville and not with us – ugh, it’s easy to let the stress get the best of me. I am trying to focus on all the good things – like my best friend who left Miami to be safer in Orlando and the fact that I get to see her and visit over lunch. I am wishing everyone well and praying that Irma changes her mind and heads out to sea!
