How To Wear A Full Skirt At Any Age

It’s no secret I am a huge fan of full skirts. They’ve show up on this blog at least once a week for the last five years, and I am wearing a full-skirted dress at Visible Monday. I love the comfort, the freedom to walk or bike, the feminine shape and the throwback to styles of the 1950’s.

As always, the first tip is: wear full skirts if you like them. Conventional style wisdom says to pair a full skirt with a fitted top. A loose-over-loose silhouette is also appealing and I do it frequently in the summer. I prefer mine at the knee or below, but a full tulle skirt, for example, looks wonderful above the knee.
Always room in my closet for a swooshy full skirt:

Our Visible Women like them too, and they provide inspiration for incorporating full skirts into your own style:

Nancy of Nancy’s Fashion Style chose a gently flared skirt in a bold print. The wide belt looks especially fab and calls back to the 50’s. A cropped jacket like Nancy’s shows off the shape of her skirt too:

Vale of Fashion And Cookies chose a maxi length full skirt in a gorgeous neutral olive. Wear this with any top – and Vale picked a feminine embellished tee. I’m crazy for her sequined sneakers:

Sacramento of Mis Papelicos does a 70’s style sheer print skirt that’s fuller at the hem. And she chose an easy silhouette for her top, so everything just flows beautifully. Go bold with your earrings, like Mis P:

Tiina of Elegance Revisited goes traditionally elegant in a coordinated full skirt and ladylike cardigan, again cropped at the waist. Love that pink bag:

Trina of Tea Time With Trina takes a striped knee-length full skirt and pairs it with a WOW floral top, for a modern mix:

Elsie of The Cooking Wardrobe does it the dress way: a full and flowy skirt with a gorgeous crossover bodice. Graceful and lovely:

  1. All of the women here look fantastic in their skirts! I don’t have many but the ones I do have I love.

  2. I love full skirts. I think they look great on other people. But I am barely 5’2″” and they make me look kinda small and goofy. Short people problems.

    • I bet you don’t look goofy at all! But you gotta wear just what you love. xo

  3. Well, aren’t you the sweetest thing ever? Thank you for the nice feature here with these other lovely ladies. Obviously I, too, love full skirts and you can catch me wearing them almost daily in the summer months. I’m absolutely in love with the entire look that Vale out together, taking this glamorous maxi and simply pairing it with a tee and then those amazing sequined sneakers gave it such a stylish fun chic-casual look. (I want those sneakers too).

  4. I love the look of a pencil skirt but as you say, you can’t really walk, let alone run, in one, and even sitting becomes uncomfortable. How crazy is that?
These photos are a wonderful mix of styles and body types, all of them looking great. It’s so helpful–seeing a photo of a an outfit on a 90-pound, six-foot-tall, 20-year-old does not help me imagine how I would look in it.

    • Agreed – pencil skirts look so smart. And LOL at your description of most advertising!

    • Yes, they can be so glam – think of Carolina Herrera’s black skirts. xo
